Acoustic separation is the resistance a wall or floor offers to airborne and impact sound. Approved Document E sets the standards: 45 dB DnT,w + Ctr airborne for separating walls in new dwellings formed by conversion, and 62 dB L'nT,w maximum impact sound through separating floors. It matters whenever a house is split into flats or a loft becomes a bedroom over a neighbour.
Sound insulation testing is required where a building is converted into flats or rooms for residential purposes. The second common miss is services. Soil pipes, extract ducts and recessed downlights all puncture the treated build-up. Downlights in a separating floor should be avoided outright or fitted in an enclosed hood.
